Why do we meditate on the Word?

In Psalm 119:15, the Bible instructs believers to “meditate on [God’s] precepts and consider [God’s] ways.”

Meditation is a combination of reviewing, repeating, reflecting, thinking, analyzing, feeling and even enjoying. It is a physical, intellectual and emotional activity—it involves our whole being. We meditate the Word, not because it changes God, but because it changes us.

How do you meditate the Word?

There are many ways to meditate on God’s Word. Here’s some things you could try:

Take time to read a verse or passage over and over.

Begin to memorize all or part of it.

Listen—quiet your heart to allow the Holy Spirit to speak to you through God’s Word.

Consider how it fits with the rest of the Bible and life in general.

Become emotionally involved—allow yourself to feel what God feels, his desires expressed through his words.

Move from meditation to application—connect your thoughts to action. Consider how the truth and power of the Word of God should affect your behavior.

With each recitation of a verse, emphasize a different word. For example, if you are meditating on John 3:16, you would emphasize a different word each time you repeated the passage:

“For God so loved the world … .”
“For God so loved the world … .”
“For God so loved the world … .”
“For God so loved the world … .”
“For God so loved the world … .”
“For God so loved the world … .”

1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NLT)

Therefore, we never stop thanking God that when you received his message from us, you didn’t think of our words as mere human ideas. You accepted what we said as the very word of God—which, of course, it is. And this word continues to work in you who believe.

John 6:63 (NLT)

The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

Meditation

The Word works in me.

I put forth a display of power when I speak the Word.

My words are spirit and life to people.

Mark 16:17-18
And these signs will follow those who believe: In My name they will cast out demons; they will speak with new

tongues; they will take up serpents; and if they drink anything deadly, it will by no means hurt them; they will

lay hands on the sick, and they will recover.

Meditation

Simply because I believe in Jesus, I cast out demons and the sick will recover when I lay my hands on them.

The powerful name of Jesus belongs to me therein lies my confidence.

I am a believer so signs and wonders follow after me everywhere, everyday, in every form.

The power of God is demonstrated through me simply because I believe in Jesus, not because I say or do the right things.

Meditation

Jesus dwells in me.

Verse to Meditate

Matthew 10:29-31 (AMP)
Are not two little sparrows sold for a copper coin? And yet not one of them falls to the ground apart from your Father’s will. But even the very hairs of your head are all numbered [for the Father is sovereign and has complete knowledge]. So do not fear; you are more valuable than many sparrows.

Matthew 10:31 (TPT)
So don’t worry. For your Father cares deeply about even the smallest detail of your life.

Meditation

You never takes Your eyes off me. You watch over me constantly.

You take great interest in every aspect of my life.

You know me so intimately that You’ve numbered the hairs of my head.

I have no reason to be afraid

I am of great value to You.

James 1:16-17 (NLT)

So don’t be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow.

Meditation

I won’t be tricked. If I see good, it’s God. If I see bad it’s not.

God’s gifts towards me are always good and perfect.

The God that created the Heavens is the God that provides for me.

What He did for someone else, He will do for me.

His love for me will never change, never wane or fade. He is the constant in my life.

Zephaniah 3:17 (NKJV)

“The Lord your God in your midst, the Mighty One, will save; he will rejoice over you with gladness, He will quiet you with His love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”

Meditation

The Lord is my God. I belong to Him. He is here with me right in this very moment.

He is the Mighty One working in my life today.

When He thinks about me He gets happy. He loves who I am and rejoices at the thought of me.

My soul is quiet, at peace and rest knowing I am loved by Him.
