What Does It Mean to Know God?

What does it really mean to “know” someone? Here’s some definitions of the word “know”:

  1. be aware of through observation, inquiry, or information.
  2. have knowledge or information concerning.
  3. have developed a relationship with (someone) through meeting and spending time with them; be familiar or friendly with.
  4. have sexual intercourse with (someone).

According to these definitions, it seems as though you would have to have a relationship with an individual to truly know them. You become aware of the person through watching and spending time with them. You begin to know their likes and dislikes, the things that make them happy and even the right buttons to push to set them over the edge. You have privileged information over others that don’t know the person like you do.

Not only is there a friendly kind of “knowing” there is an intimate kind as well. Let’s take for instance, in the Old Testament, the Bible says that Adam “knew” Eve and they had a child. That is referring to an intimate knowing of an individual.

Do you truly know God? Can you say you know what He likes, how He acts or how He would react in a situation? I’m here to tell you that you CAN know Him like that!  He wants to be known by you. It’s not difficult to know Him- it just takes spending time with Him and building a relationship- He’ll reveal all you need to know about your life in Him.

I Corinthians 2:10-16 MSG

The Spirit, not content to flit around on the surface, dives into the depths of God, and brings out what God planned all along. Who ever knows what you’re thinking and planning except you yourself? The same with God—except that he not only knows what he’s thinking, but he lets us in on it. God offers a full report on the gifts of life and salvation that he is giving us. We don’t have to rely on the world’s guesses and opinions. We didn’t learn this by reading books or going to school; we learned it from God, who taught us person-to-person through Jesus, and we’re passing it on to you in the same firsthand, personal way.

John 14:17

But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.

I’m confident that there are many people that have worked signs and miracles but still don’t really know God. I’m talking about really knowing Him and having relationship with him, like we just talked about. There are those, of course,  that really do know Him and the riches and depth of who He really is.

To know the greatness and the vastness of who He really is will boost you further than you’d ever think. To know Him will take you places that could never imagine.

To know Him will put you in a place of security like you’ve never known before.

There’s people that know God, but don’t let him in. People can have all kinds of areas in their life where they’ve not invited him in. It might seem as though letting God into your life would cause pain.  It might be painful for the moment because you let go of something. But when you let go, God enriches everything in your life.

He take all oppression and depression, He’ll take all your concerns! He makes your rest sweet. Allowing Him to take your worry & concerns  causes you to breath deep! There’s absolute freedom in Him. It’s all in knowing him.
